Dear CPAL Readers,
We finally have some good news from Queen’s Park — but it’s not time to relax.
The Ontario government has introduced Bill 33, the Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025, and it has just passed Second Reading. If passed into law, this bill could mark a major turning point in restoring academic integrity, parental authority, and common sense to our schools and postsecondary institutions.
Here’s why this matters:
🧾 What Bill 33 (2025) Would Do
Refocus education on student success and learning, not activism.
Require universities and colleges to prioritize admissions based on merit, not race or identity group quotas.
Ban ideological school renaming campaigns like the Toronto District School Board's plan to erase historic Canadian names.
Give the Minister of Education more direct authority to intervene when school boards go off track or misuse taxpayer funds.
Shift focus back to fiscal responsibility and good governance.
This is not just a symbolic bill. If it passes, it could reset the trajectory of education in Ontario—and help restore trust in our institutions.
🟢 The Good News
The bill has already passed First Reading and is now at Second Reading. That means there’s still time to influence the outcome—and we need your voice to make sure it doesn’t stall or get watered down.
Let’s not take this progress for granted. We must show our support and make it loud and clear: parents are watching, and we expect the government to follow through with action, not just words.
⚠️ Why Parents Must Act Now
Bill 33 is currently not law. It still must go through:
Committee hearings (where it can be amended or weakened),
Third Reading,
Final vote, and
Royal Assent.
If we want these reforms to go through strong and uncompromised, MPPs need to hear from us now.

Subject: Please support Bill 33 – Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025
Dear [MPP’s Name],
I’m writing as a concerned parent and constituent to strongly urge you to support Bill 33, the Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025.
This bill represents a much-needed shift in Ontario’s education system. For too long, schools and universities have been distracted by ideological agendas that undermine academic integrity and create division among students. Bill 33 refocuses our education system on what truly matters: student achievement, academic standards, and responsible governance.
I support Bill 33 because it:
Requires publicly funded colleges and universities to prioritize merit-based admissions.
Ends politically motivated school renaming efforts that erase Canadian history.
Empowers the province to hold school boards accountable for their academic and financial decisions.
Sends a clear message that education should be centered on learning, not activism.
As a parent, I want to see our education system uphold high standards, encourage independent and thoughtful analysis, and provide real opportunities for all students—free from political influence or social engineering.
Please vote in favour of Bill 33 and ensure it is passed without weakening amendments. Parents across Ontario are watching closely and expecting action.
Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]

Let’s make it crystal clear: Parents are not backing down.
We are encouraged — cautiously — by the direction of Bill 33. But we know actions speak louder than words, and we will be watching closely to ensure this bill passes and is not weakened behind closed doors.
Now is the time to flood our MPPs with emails and calls. This is how we make our voice count.
Hi, I'm writing from BC. Even as a great grandparent and long time parent advocate I still keep a close watch on education. I greatly admire CPAL's work in this regard and would greatly encourage massive amount of letters in support of Bill 33. There was a great column by Randall Denley in the National Post, which people should look up. https://nationalpost.com/opinion/ontario-is-finally-forcing-out-dei-from-schools-and-universities
I just posted this comment:
Quickly reading some of the top comments of the over 460 so far I see that most people are assuming that Bill 33 is now a reality and in place. The general feeling is of great relief that finally the “government wants trustees who focus on student learning and fiscal responsibility” instead of other agendas. “Long overdue!” was one comment.
However the bill — Supporting Children and Students Act — is still just the proposal. It’s still at the Second Reading stage with debate adjourned. Yet to come: Committee hearings (where it can be amended or weakened), Third Reading, Final Vote, and Royal Assent.
It is too early for parents to rest easy. It is undoubtedly largely parent concerns that have inspired these needed improvements. And even in this 19 page bill “parents” are mentioned only once. Where trustees and education directors are expected to fulfill their duties in an appropriate manner — besides attending to education programs, student achievement, finances, etc. — one point specifies one duty is to ensure “the engagement of parents and other entities that may have an interest in the activities of a board”.
I fear this is where there could be a hangup. Many vested interests simply do not want an effective parent voice in school affairs and the bill might be seriously thwarted or amended.
